A languorous vampire tale
My thing this week is “Viola in Midwinter” by Marie-Helene Bertino, a dreamlike and slow moving tale of hunger and forgetting.
She is always on the verge of a headache: the Shop & Save is always open: she is always forty-nine.
The author describes it as a “story about a vampire in menopause”, and it’s certainly that, though Viola is caught between more than just biological states. It’s equal parts strange and sad, gleeful and dark, and definitely worth a read.
