“Quiet Dead Things” by Cassandra Khaw

Posted on January 30, 2022

After a gruesome murder, a small town isolates itself from the outside world, only to find that it has not in fact protected itself.

Another from “When Things Get Dark,” this has a claustrophobic and paranoid feeling, with the circle of trust growing ever tighter while the scope of danger grows ever wider. There’s something fable-like in the telling, with the characters mere sketches of their roles in the town – mayor, gossip, constable, immigrant shopkeeper – which adds to the eerie and oppressive atmosphere.
