The warming climate has awakened a vengeful spirit from an abandoned mine on Svalbard, and a woman with Siberian heritage dredges up an ancient memory to try to face it.
This story does a good job of capturing the strangeness of the far-northern winter, when the sun never quite rises, and the terror of total night. It leaves the plot hanging at a critical juncture, having built a good deal of tension to get there.
