The only girl – who doesn’t feel much like a girl to herself – on a high school wrestling team gets some unexpected help against her bully.
This is another disturbing little story from “Suicide Woods”; the plot is largely predictable, but that’s not really the point – it’s the characterization that makes it interesting and unsettling. Johnette is dark and complex – equally self-assured and uncertain, with a nasty cruel streak of her own – and Breck is awful in the way all bullies of his type are, yet strangely pitiable in the end (an end which is not at all unjustified, but is quite harsh).
