“The Terminal Island” by J.G. Ballard

Posted on April 6, 2022

A man tormented by his past hides on an island that had been used for nuclear weapons testing.

This story has a post-apocalyptic feeling, even though the nuclear devastation has been limited just to the abandoned testing site. It also has a dream-like feeling, as the protagonist becomes lost in the maze of concrete bunkers, is haunted by visions of his dead wife and child, and hides among abandoned mannequins from authorities sent to find him.
